Code update

Code was just updated. In particular, this update brings the alpha version (first release) of the crossposter tool. This release also brings a change to the way we do adult content to bring it more in line with our goals for the site. More information on the adult content change.

Please keep in mind that this is Closed Beta. As such, we're iterating quickly, and releasing early. There will be bugs, that's a promise.

Please let us know what issues you find so we can fix them up!

Question

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2009-04-20 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Can the crossposter tool work retroactively (I mean on entries you've already posted)?

Clicking on the button on http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=othersites to add an account results in no reaction.

The crossposter tool brings a message that says I will be notified upon success of crosspostage. Really? (I mean, apparently no, not really; the cross-post works, including with edit, but I have neither email nor inbox message, and I see noting in notifications to control this and there's not a FAQ yet).

Uh, not that I'm irritated at the lack of documentation or anything; I imagine it's coming and also that the documenting folks have Plenty To Do. Just, I wondered if I could expect to get emails for every cross-post, if it was an option that would be turn-onable and offable, etc.

Also, this is a very cool feature.

Possibly this is Working As Intended, but it seems odd to me that the crossposter tool strips out all LJ-specific formatting codes, even ones that are using valid syntax for the site being crossposted to (e.g., cut tags in the form of <lj-cut>).

Less unexpectedly, this applies to usernames also, even when using the <lj user="x" site="y"> format where y matches the site being crossposted to. If that kind of smart crossposting isn't part of the plan for current crossposter tool functionality (and I have no idea how much work it would be or if there'd be any interest in it beyond my own) that's cool.

I'm interested in being able to write my own default "point back to DW" text for entries cross-posted with comments disabled. Will that be possible in future releases?

This is very cool! I just tried on to x-post on LJ/IJ and it worked great, and editing the post worked too.

So far, so good! Crossposting to lj seems to work instantly, at least for my simple post-and-edit test. :D

Notifications, I got none. Personally, I think it'd be more useful to be notified when something doesn't work. Turn on/turn off for notifications would be very useful, to echo the posters above. :)

Edit:

* Deletion by crosspost works like a charm, hooray!

* Editing a post that I imported from lj, however, resulted in a new lj post, right next to the original. First post (in lj) is unchanged, the second one contains the added words.

I've just tried to add my LJ account in the settings tab as an account to crosspost to. But when I click 'Add New Account', nothing happens.

The crossposter is cool. It would be nice to have it be able to crosspost to communities, but I realise that this is probably way down your list of priorities.

Also, a tiny tweak? Can the word OpenID in This entry was originally posted at http://miss-s-b.dreamwidth.org/880089.html. Please comment there using OpenID. be made into a link to the OpenID page?

Clicking the 'Add New Account' button had no response for me but I could proceed successfully when using the direct link http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/externalaccount.bml given by [personal profile] florahart. I'm running IE, if that makes a difference.

Issues I noticed:

Cut content doesn't stay cut because of the different markup between sites I guess so you have to be careful about what you post. A warning about this may be useful.

It doesn't always work for old entries: you tick the boxes, get the message but if you edit the entry again, the boxes are not ticked. I'm using Firefox 3.0.8 on Win Vista Pro SP1. Not that I really care. I'm just very glad it works well for new entries.:) Thank you.

Probably more worthy of a coolhunters post, but it seems relevant to this, so - any possibility of being able to cross-post to a filter?

i.e. make a public post here, but the crossposted entry ends up on a filter?

I'm thinking probably not, but it would be very useful if it is possible as I don't want to x-post at the moment to save the annoyance of those who read both my DW and my LJ - but I have some people saying "but now I'll never get to see your posts!" because checking DW themselves for my posts, nor subscribing via RSS, nor tracking my journal quite work for them.

Not urgent, though, I understand - just pitching it in as a It Would Be Very Shiny If... thing for future consideration.

I cross posted, and it worked quite well. I don't have icons over here yet to test how they transfer, but I used a tag here than I don't have on lj and the lj entry made a new tag.

The two problems I had were that
1) I didn't have my account set up for cross posting. I set it up, which was easy, but then there's no link back to your entry. I hit back a few times, then refreshed and reentered the title when I restored from draft, and posted without incident. It's pretty minor because you wouldn't set it up that often, but maybe a link back to 'post an entry' on the page?

2) There is a clicky box after "Crosspost this entry" and before "Manage accounts" and then lower down a clicky box before "dzurlady@livejournal.com". I wasn't sure which one to click. (Turns out the dzurlady on is the one to tick. Manage accounts doesn't seem to do anything?) I didn't try selecting both.

This isn't a feature I'd want myself but I think the question's going to come up - will the crossposter be able to be tweaked so that if a user doesn't want Dreamwidth to save their LJ password, they will have the option to enter their password each time they crosspost?

You probably already have this one, but:

I embedded a couple of youtube videos and then cross-posted to my LJ.

The cross-post worked (yay!) but then I looked a little harder and the videos were ones I posted months ago. Different ones. Entirely. And not even the most recent ones.

Very dada-esque.

Have fun sorting that one out. (I fixed the LJ post, sorry).
catchmyfancy: (Default)

Sorry - should have clarified

[personal profile] catchmyfancy 2009-04-20 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Have only had DW account for a few days, so the youtube vids I am talking about were ones I posted on my **LJ** some months ago, and they were what popped up in the cross-post, instead of the ones I had embedded here on DW.

Don't know if that's a DW issue or an LJ issue.

Incidentally, cross-posting tool VERY cool, dead easy to set up and even easier to use. It said something about a notification, but, meh, I trust you folks. :)

Adding a new account was easy and intuitive, I like how you can set defaults then manage them as you post.

Crossposting picked up title, tags, bolded text, numbered lists, usernames common to LJ+DW and URLs.

Didn't notify on success - agree option to turn off or notify on fail would be good.

Broke LJ-cut ("/lj-cut" jumped up a few lines) but I think this is an LJ-rich text editor problem because it does it to me on LJ anyway if "lj user=x" is present.

I'd like the ability to cross-post to more than one site, but leave comments enabled on some sites and disabled on others. For instance, at the moment I'm still checking my LJ inbox regularly, but not my IJ one - so I'd like to be able to cross-post to LJ with comments on, but direct comments from IJ to DW. At the moment, it looks like that isn't an option. Is it something that could be considered?

which is to say, it all worked perfectly - posting and editing/deleting - apart from the lack of notification, as others have said.

I think the cross-posting is pretty cool! Are there plans to be able to cross-post to other accounts/comms on DW?

Neither of my cross-post have (so far) turned up at inksome -- I donno if that's a problem with inksome or the cross-posting tool. The box is always unchecked when I look back, even though it was checked before posting.

I like that the tags get added the other journals and wish the mood did too.

Crossposting is nifty and works well for me, except for the aforementioned problem with Internet Explorer 6 and trying to click the button to get to http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/externalaccount.bml.

One question: is it currently feasible to post to more than one account? Because I added my LJ account fine and posted fine, but then when I went to try to add my InsaneJournal account, I could enter the IJ account info, but then when I clicked "Create" nothing happened. Could this be another unfortunate side effect of using IE 6? (Stupid work hasn't upgraded us yet, even though they've been promising for months!)

However, yay for crossposting!!! Thank you so much!

This has been brought up before, but the only problem I'm having so far is with "lj-cut". On cross-posting to LJ the tags are completely stripped from the entry.
