Code update

Code was just updated. In particular, this update brings the alpha version (first release) of the crossposter tool. This release also brings a change to the way we do adult content to bring it more in line with our goals for the site. More information on the adult content change.

Please keep in mind that this is Closed Beta. As such, we're iterating quickly, and releasing early. There will be bugs, that's a promise.

Please let us know what issues you find so we can fix them up!

Question

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2009-04-20 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Can the crossposter tool work retroactively (I mean on entries you've already posted)?

Clicking on the button on http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=othersites to add an account results in no reaction.

The crossposter tool brings a message that says I will be notified upon success of crosspostage. Really? (I mean, apparently no, not really; the cross-post works, including with edit, but I have neither email nor inbox message, and I see noting in notifications to control this and there's not a FAQ yet).

Uh, not that I'm irritated at the lack of documentation or anything; I imagine it's coming and also that the documenting folks have Plenty To Do. Just, I wondered if I could expect to get emails for every cross-post, if it was an option that would be turn-onable and offable, etc.

Also, this is a very cool feature.

Hm. It did work for me. It opens this page: http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/externalaccount.bml --I wonder if it doesn't like all browsers/OSes/etc? Though I dunno why that would be true as it's just a link. Oh, but it also checks for changes to settings, huh?

I'm Firefox (current--3.0.8), XP SP 3, in case that's relevant.

Someone was saying it works on edits, so... maybe? Try it? You might have to edit each post, make a small change, and tick the crosspost box.

It doesn't appear to notify, at least at present, and I hope it is turn-off-able if it does start to.

What's the change?

I did actually but I now realize I had forgotten to tick the second box. It says I'll be notified when it's worked.

I'm wondering this too. The post options seem to be the same... is it something about how you choose to view it?

Possibly this is Working As Intended, but it seems odd to me that the crossposter tool strips out all LJ-specific formatting codes, even ones that are using valid syntax for the site being crossposted to (e.g., cut tags in the form of <lj-cut>).

Less unexpectedly, this applies to usernames also, even when using the <lj user="x" site="y"> format where y matches the site being crossposted to. If that kind of smart crossposting isn't part of the plan for current crossposter tool functionality (and I have no idea how much work it would be or if there'd be any interest in it beyond my own) that's cool.

I was curious about that "notified when it works" message. I can't see that I got a notification, but it seemed to work fine.

I'm interested in being able to write my own default "point back to DW" text for entries cross-posted with comments disabled. Will that be possible in future releases?

Postscript: for future reference, you might also want to bear in mind that statements about "a change to the way we do adult content" without specifying the nature of the change are liable to produce reflex panic attacks from fannish people -- I'm sure [staff profile] denise can explain *g*.

I'm sure you're not doing anything evil, but it's something where people can be very paranoid, because "adult content policy" so often means "sweeping you people under the rug" (see recent Amazon failitude).

So if it's just "we've tweaking the viewing options to do x and y", it really helps to say so right away.

This is very cool! I just tried on to x-post on LJ/IJ and it worked great, and editing the post worked too.

Good to know, thanks. Well, it didn't work for me on an old entry or it's very, very slow worked after a while - at first the boxes wouldn't stay ticked for some reason. I'll try with a new one. It worked well.

So far, so good! Crossposting to lj seems to work instantly, at least for my simple post-and-edit test. :D

Notifications, I got none. Personally, I think it'd be more useful to be notified when something doesn't work. Turn on/turn off for notifications would be very useful, to echo the posters above. :)

Edit:

* Deletion by crosspost works like a charm, hooray!

* Editing a post that I imported from lj, however, resulted in a new lj post, right next to the original. First post (in lj) is unchanged, the second one contains the added words.

same here -- well, not exactly the same; when i click the "add new account" button, it tells me "You have successfully saved your account settings." but it does indeed not do anything else.

going to http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/externalaccount.bml works.

ETA: and the actual crossposting to LJ did work fine. i got no notification (which it said it would give me). the html looks a little different, and i will test a few things hereafter to see what happens) -- great job for an alpha release! thanks!

I've just tried to add my LJ account in the settings tab as an account to crosspost to. But when I click 'Add New Account', nothing happens.

The changes (and please note that I am unofficial, and I didn't work on the code, so I may have missed some details):

* 14+ is now NSFW, and is an age-independent viewing preference. Instead of being a restriction, it is more an indication of adult content level.

* (if I understand the discussion and code right) We no longer check for age for posts marked with the NSFW level, since everyone on the service will be 13+. However, we still check for age for posts marked 18+

* in that vein, site text now says "this page should be viewed with discretion", instead of "this journal may contain adult concepts", etc.

* If you choose to see interstitial pages, based on your viewing preferences, change the handling of interstitials so that it shows every time you visit a new entry, under the assumption that if you asked to see interstitials, it is because you want to avoid accidentally seeing something that you didn't want to see (the interstitial contains the reason for why the user marked something as NSFW/18+)

* and so that the above change won't be annoying, don't show interstitials for a particular entry if you've already clicked through. This is so that you can click on individual comment threads, without having to open a new interstitial page each time (this "remembers" that you've viewed the entry for up to 30 minutes or so)

* under-18 users still can't skip the interstitial page, though :-)

* oooh found code comment which states the desired logic, in shorter form than I did:

# logged in users with a defined age of under 18 are blocked from explicit adult content
# logged in users with a defined age of under 18 are given a confirmation page for adult concepts depending on their settings
# logged in users with a defined age of 18 or older are given confirmation pages for adult content depending on their settings

* prettier icons!

* fix the logic so that the 18+/NSFW icons also show if the journal is marked 18+/NSFW. Peviously, it showed only if the entry was marked 18+/NSFW.

Didn't notice if there were any changes to the logic for logged out users.

The crossposter is cool. It would be nice to have it be able to crosspost to communities, but I realise that this is probably way down your list of priorities.

Also, a tiny tweak? Can the word OpenID in This entry was originally posted at http://miss-s-b.dreamwidth.org/880089.html. Please comment there using OpenID. be made into a link to the OpenID page?

This happens for me too. The page reloads as if it is going to do something, but nothing happens. There is no text box or anything, just the "Add account" button.
