code update

We just did a rather large code update, with something like 50 separate commits... that's a lot. This should fix a lot of issues we've been seeing.

As always, if you run into anything, please let us know! You're welcome to comment here, or open a support request to get some help.

Thank you!

Hi! I'm not sure if this is a bug or something intentional on your part (which sounds sinister but I don't mean it that way. It's my Monday and I've yet to have a full pot of coffee) but when I try to add more than one account to the crossposting feature of Dreamwidth.org I'm unable to add and it just keeps repeating the page. It makes sense that you only allow one, or if you allow more it's a paid feature and if that's the case you may want to post that somewhere so those of us that have more than two journals can know. :D

Thanks!

I'm getting the same thing, it just acts like it's crossposting and then...doesn't. No error message or anything, and because it crossposted successfully to one account, I didn't realize that that was the problem.

Thanks so much for letting us unpaid users add an S2 style! My eyes were starting to bleed.

Having said that, the style that compiles cleanly on LJ had a few hiccups over here. While I was working on fixing them, I clicked the "Documentation" link on the style edit page:

http://www.dreamwidth.org/doc/s2

It takes me to an empty directory listing. I suspect that's not what you intended. I did eventually fix the style bugs with a bit of tweaking and one outright paste-in-the-HTML workaround, so I'm happy with that!

We're redoing the docs from scratch, because the ones on LJ are just awful. Right now, having no docs at all is worse than having bad documentation, but several people are working on creating some actually useful documentation for the S2 system.

[personal profile] rosefox 2009-05-10 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't the "no docs at all" part; it was the "lack of 404/placeholder" part. I think letting people visit your directories is a security risk.

One other thing, that is not a bug, just more of an FYI type of thing. On the mobile view (btw totally awesome that I don't have to have a seperate group for the mobile view) it still says LiveJournal on the reading circle page. Just thought you'd like to know.

[personal profile] zvi 2009-05-10 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
but the answer they have previously given to this question is:

(a) Not any time soon, maybe never.
(b) If they do, it's likely to be a paid user add-on, as opposed to just a la carte userpics.
(c) If they implemented a la carte userpics (without a paid account), they would wind up charging you about 90% of the paid account cost anyway, because userpics are the most expensive thing on the website and the sort of person who wants to buy just userpics uses them in an even more expensive way than the average of all people who buy paid accounts.

Re: I am not Mark or Denise

The more different icons a person uses (by which I mean, uses some way on the site that causes the icon to be displayed), the more expensive it is to serve icons.

Many people with a paid account don't upload all of the icons they are alloted, and rarely use most of the ones they have uploaded. (Sometimes this is because their icon needs are fulfilled at 15, so they buy the paid account to get the extra icons, but they don't need all of the icons a paid account provides) and sometimes it's because they're actually interested in some other paid account feature (the last time I renewed on LJ, it was because I couldn't deal with not being able to expand comments or edit my own comments.)

In any case, a person who is paying for just the icons is going to (a) never be the sort of person who bought a paid account for something other than icons and (b) more likely to feel like they need to max out their icon slot, so as to feel they're getting their money's worth, especially if the a la carte icons were priced where they'd have to be realistically, as just about the same $ as a paid account.

I would also suspect that roleplayers are one of the big userpic buyers on LJ (I certainly was when I roleplayed) and they use a lot of userpics. A lot.

That's a relic of when we branched from LJ's code -- they introduced the "search by email address" after we branched, but the setting was implemented before we branched. When we go through and finish cleaning up all the settings that are only accessible through that page, we'll yank that one.

Hi, I'm having some trouble with the javascript hovers when you move over icons (communities and users)

The background of the javascript layer is not loading, and so the text is transparent and on top of other things.

This happens on every page within DW, including friends home pages, default themes, and the like.

Using: Firefox 3.0.10 / Mac OSX 10.5.6

Trouble since: Today (am new, so... don't know if it was prior to this)

This was a deliberate change with this code push. The buttons appear above and below the list of custom filters, mostly for people who have a lot of filters but may not want to add the person to any, so they can just click the top "Add" button rather than scrolling all the way down.

Seconding this. I also liked how the tags sorted into subcategories if you used colons in your tagging system. It might not be feasible to keep it that way but it was a nice feature for those of us who are, er, organizationally obsessed.

Oh I didn't think you meant the tags page. The option is there, they've added it to the other layouts but I think they've forgotten to include it to Transmogrified.

If you're comfortable with editing layers, go to your Layers page, find the Transmogrified layer called 'Auto-generated Customizations' and add this line:

set tags_page_type = "multi";

[personal profile] dancing_serpent 2009-05-10 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Page summary fixed, hurrah!

I'm also having the problem with the backgroundless popups (Firefox 2.0.0.8, Windows XP).

I searched for "visited links", and found bug 1150, which refers to my support request; I know it's not just me that has that problem, I saw comments about it ... somewhere. I've tried using the "Custom CSS" and couldn't get it to work. Is there a how-to anywhere?

Will it always be necessary to look at changelog to find out whether a particular problem has been addrssed? A lot of it is a bit too technical for me.

Not sure if this new or has been there for a while but I just tried embedding a video from Photobucket and only after I took the long way, posted it to LJ and copied the code it would show up in the entry. The 'not showing up before' also managed to cut off the rest of the entry.

But that's not all. When I went back to change a minor detail (like, correct a typo or change my userpic) it would do that again (cutting off everything starting with the videos). When I went back to check if I accidentally deleted something from the embed-tag I realized that the part that was cut off in the entry was cut off in the code of my entry, too.

I'm just glad I had the whole thing crossposted to LJ manually beforehand so I could copy the complete code. That brought back my complete entry but didn't stop it from being all messed up again after I had to edit it again (forgot to correct that type after all).

The "expand" link does not really expand the comment, it just opens up to new page. But it's not a big deal. I just wanted to know if it works on the layouts ported to DW from LJ such as Flexible Squares or Smooth Sailing. It works for Transmorgified, though.
av8rmike: Neo from Matrix, text: I know S2 (I know s2)

[personal profile] av8rmike 2009-05-11 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If you copied Smooth Sailing directly from LJ, it uses a function called expand_link() to print the "Expand" link. For some reason "untrusted" (i.e., non-system layers) can't call this function directly-- they have to use print_expand_link() instead. That's true both here and on LJ.

All of the keyword, comment, and description information has disappeared for exactly one of my icons. It appears as blank space when I'm looking at the icon page, whether I'm logged in or not, and when I go to edit, it has replaced that information with just a pic number. Finally, it does not appear on my drop down menu. The other 199 icons are fine.

I will leave it uncorrected for the moment. It's the icon that reads "Buffy Summers does not approve," and it's grouped with the other icons of Buffy, just below the Firefly icons.

I know that the code wrangling the icons over on LJ is glitchy as well, so perhaps this will help track that issue down? Unlike the recurring LJ bug, it hasn't replaced the icon with some other random image. She's the right icon in the right place, the info is just wiped.

Hm, OK, thanks. I just wasn't expecting to get an HTML version... *g*

Oh boy. This is complicated, and probably only bothers me, but...

The other day I noticed that if I'm on my reading page and I want to click through to an entry page, the "# comments" link (what I usually use to get to an entry page, here or on LJ) takes me down to the actual comments, meaning I have to scroll up to read the post. From my reading page I can click on the title of the user's entry, and that'll take me to the entry page, but I have my preferences set to show me entry pages in style=mine, and the entry title link doesn't automatically append that. I can click on "leave a comment" and that'll take me to the entry page in my style, but the comments won't be loaded.

Basically, what I want is, from my reading page, a way to load entry pages in my style. For example, I'd want to end up here: http://dw-maintenance.dreamwidth.org/7497.html?style=mine

I don't see anyway to do that, currently. UNLESS the post doesn't yet have any comments, then it has a "link" link that does look exactly like this: http://dw-maintenance.dreamwidth.org/7497.html?style=mine

But that link goes away as soon as there are comments.

Just a layout thing. The subtitle names on my pages have default periods on them, which looks funny since mine has a question mark. It reads: "Where am I going?." The Reading page says "And what am I doing in this handbasket?." They are not in the editing page; they only show up in the headers.

Bug uploading pics to entries

With regard to uploading pics to use within blog entries, while I can link to pics on the web successfully, I have no luck uploading pics to entries from my PC (I use Firefox). I'm using the rich text format, and within Insert/Edit Image the Upload feature simply doesn't work. My little foxy just runs and runs forever, poor critter, getting no where! I suspect a BUG ran off with the feature...

Not a bug, but I'm wondering if there are plans to have the icon key words visible when one hovers the mouse over the icon? (You know, like on LJ, ha ha.) Or does this vary by styles, because it seems I'm not getting the text in any style.
