The site slowdown tonight (Saturday night) is due to database load -- Saturday nights are one of our busiest times and we're still going to need to do some performance tweaks to our new setup over the next few days as we run into load issues. (Some problems only show up once all y'all start banging on the site!) We've made a few changes now that will improve things for some people, and will do a more permanent fix later on tonight or tomorrow morning once the traffic dies down, since doing it now would just increase database load.
Site performance may continue to be rocky on and off for the next few days until we get everything tuned the way it needs to be tuned -- thank you for your patience!

Really, though, THANKS AS ALWAYS for the attentiveness and communication! <333

Really it's just that we can predict traffic, but y'all are a bunch of overachievers...

Video embedding still wonky
Cross posting, image hosting, replies - looking good.
Re: Video embedding still wonky
Picture embedding wonky
As far as I know, there is no easy way for me to upload pictures into a post here (if there is, I'd love to learn about it), but in LiveJournal it's straightforward. So I start a post on LiveJournal and upload my picture into that, specifying that I want a link from the 300px image in the post to the full-size original. Then I copy the resulting HTML, including the URL of the picture at LiveJournal, and paste it into a new post here. When I save this post I have it automatically crosspost to LiveJournal, and after checking them both I delete the draft there.
This has worked for me for years. But now, although the LiveJournal post works just as intended, showing the 300px picture linked to the full-size one, the post here shows only the alt text, linked. See

Pictures working now; old "Save" bug still here
is still broken in the same wayWORKS NOW, after I've typed all this, but it took quite a while. Everything in regular black here was typed before I opened it again and found the picture appearing properly. I've (using HTML view)• opened it for editing and saved it
• reloaded it; the pro
• opened it, added a space, and saved it
• reloaded it
• previewed it (looked right)
• switched to the visual editor (looked right) and saved it; this caused the string "Save" to be attached at the end, coming from the godawful mishMIME span appended to this comment. (I reported this bug several months ago and have seen it on other blogs as well. Obviously it has still not been fixed.)
• opened it in HTML again and deleted the mishmosh
• reloaded again
And each time till the last, when I viewed it on my journal, the picture was not there.
SaveSave
The mishmosh is above this line; as usual, only the word "Save" shows. Here it is again, with the angle brackets changed to square brackets:

Re: Pictures working now; old "Save" bug still here
I do remember seeing your report about the extra content appended at the end of the edited entry, but I was sure it was caused by a browser extension and not our site. Based on these comments, I've narrowed it down to the issue mentioned here:

Re: Pictures working now; old "Save" bug still here
I'm using my Android phone, and AFAIK I have no extensions in Firefox on it. I did have the Pinterest app; could that have caused it? I've deleted it, so we'll see what happens.
I've also had the problem on my laptop; will check tomorrow.

But why can't you contact Pinterest and tell them that their code is causing you this problem (and losing them subscribers)?

Grrrr. I'll try that but not now, it's 3 am.

I have a news post partially written and am hoping to get it up soon! It hasn't been a good year for me, and every time I've had the time/brain to write one, it's been a period when outbound email was sucking -- posting a news post kills outbound email for a while because of the volume, so I didn't want to make it worse.

ETA: correction, the post without attachments has turned up after a slight delay. Still no sign of the one with the images, though.

Oh, yeah. I've worked in the software industry (senior linguist at Dragon Systems all through the 1990s), and I've seen how that goes.

Is this a related issue or have I borked something? (sorry for the double comment, I decided to use a non-embarrassing-rpg-account instead)
