Nginx has been banished!

Hey all,

Sorry for the 'Welcome to nginx!' issues we've been seeing for a bit now. It was a server configuration issue that hit us when a webserver rebooted.

Basically when the machine rebooted, nginx (software that can act as a web server) started up and then when Apache (the software Dreamwidth code uses for a web server) tried to start, it failed because nginx had already started and registered on the ports (the way web server software gets your requests).

Again, sorry for the site issues. Everything should be back to happy-times now, so let us know if you see any issues!

Thank you! I'm still seeing this message in a couple of older entries though: http://lethe1.dreamwidth.org/tag/videos (scroll down to 13 Nov. and 11 Nov.)

Hi lethe! Those entries both load fine for me (in that I see embedded YouTube videos) -- this might be a problem with your browser cache. Could you do a hard refresh (usually you can do this by holding down shift while clicking the refresh button) and tell me if you're still getting error messages after that?

Thank you!

Hi kaberett, no, that doesn't work, I'm afraid.

ETA It does work in Firefox, but in Safari I keep seeing those two entries with the nginx message.

Thank you, that's useful information to have!

Can I get you to try
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<a [...] http://www.wikihow.com/clear-your-browser's-cache">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

Thank you, that's useful information to have!

Can I get you to try <a href="clearing your browser's cache</a>? <a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache">This WikiHow page</a> has instructions on how to do so for Safari on several flavours of OSX, iOS/iPhone/iPad, and Windows.

I don't see an option to clear my cache in my Safari menu, but I believe it has cleared up of its own accord. I can see the videos in both entries again.

Thank you very much for your help! :)

I was a bit flummoxed after logging off last night with everything okay and then this morning the nginx page appeared. I'd done the computer housekeeping yesterday (always do it on a Sunday) and knew I'd installed nothing new, so I rebooted and then everything was okay so I think that must have coincided with you fixing it. Thank you.

I didn't encounter this, but TIL that only one daemon can be listening on any given port. Useful to know. Thank you.

Hi scarletsoldier!

Could you please try doing a hard refresh (usually this works by holding down the shift key while clicking the refresh button) and clearing your browser's cache? If you're still seeing error messages after you've done those (and especially if you've already done them!) please tell me.

Thank you for letting me know that you're still seeing problems!

Yes, several Russian ISPs block access to Dreamwidth. That is not a situation we have any control over.
