Server maintenance in progress

Hey, what's this? Our search server is down? Oh, looks like we're getting our memory upgrade, with no notice, during a peak usage period. Nice.

(time passes, dinner is eaten, email is checked again)

Hey, what's this? Our search server is still down? How could a memory upgrade possibly take three hours?

(hosting company website is poked and prodded)

Oh, okay, I see, they did notify [staff profile] mark, but they said the work was scheduled for 0500-0600 CST... And they said it was completed at, um, 1739? What?!

Yeah. Let's just say we're going to be one server short for a while. I'm guessing the server is up but not plugged in or something. Maybe if it comes back online I'll request a memory upgrade in another server just to see what happens next time...

Meanwhile, anyone got some happy thoughts I can borrow? But not so many that we overload the remaining servers?

Update: Looks like it worked; the search server is back (still as a webserver, but hopefully not for too much longer). I've put in a memory upgrade request for another one of the webservers that just happened to have less RAM than the others; after that's fixed we should be able to turn search back on.

You're welcome. ^_^ It's unclear whether Derpy Hooves is much help. She might be a programming genius, or she might accidentally drop a piano on the server...

I've just come online and on looking through my latest entries and then my DWircle, I find that there are no cut-tag expansion clicky things showing (yes, I realise there's a proper name for them, I just can't remember what it is!!)

Is this something to do with the outage? I miss them, and it's only been five minutes since I opened DW this morning!!!

That shouldn't be related. Try closing and reopening your browser, and if that doens't help, open a support request!

I haven't done anything and they've sorted themselves out now. Weird.

(As you say, it's amazing what a difference it makes having those there. I never knew I needed them before you guys put them in!)

I love DW! You guys are all sorts of awesome.

... that's very nice of the company to give you such great advance notice. *eyeroll*

I guess I got lucky, though, because I never even ran into any speed or down issues today. Looking forward to the return of search and thank you for the info! \o/

Does this have anything to do with why I cannot do hyperlinks in Rich Text on DW?

I have to do them all at LJ and then import them to DW, which is time-consuming when the x-post function is DW to LJ, not the other way around.

denise: Image: Me, facing away from camera, on top of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome (Default)

[staff profile] denise 2011-08-16 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The rich text editor is very, very buggy. We do our best to keep fixing problems as people find them, but it's not guaranteed; new browsers wind up having problems that older browsers didn't.

If the problem persists, open a support request. They might be able to help troubleshoot the problem. If it's a bug, though, it'll probably be a while until it gets fixed, since we intend to replace the RTE entirely instead of fixing individual problems.

[personal profile] al_zorra 2011-08-16 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Yes, this inability to hyperlink in Rich Text arrived with upgrade to IE 9.

Love, C.

Ugh, yes. A few other people have pointed that out, I think. It's definitely a browser-interaction bug, but as I said I don't think we're going to put a lot of attention towards fixing it; IE9 users are a very very small percentage of our traffic and it's likely that to fix it, we'd have to tear out the RTE and start over, which is something we're planning to do anyway! (I've been hoping to find somebody to fling that project at, in fact. *g*)
