Code push imminent... UPDATE: code push done!

We are planning did do a code push tonight! The exact timing will depend on people's availability but it should be sometime between 9:30PM EST and 11:30PM EST. Most of the changes included in this code push can be found in the most recent code tour.

Here are the new updates you are most likely to notice and appreciate:

  • fix for /customize applying intended community style changes to the logged-in user
  • fix for /manage/circle/edit not saving some changes
  • two new mood themes from Socchan
  • modernized design for the /poll/create page
  • modernized design for the /manage/profile page
  • support for adding Steam usernames on user profiles

We don't anticipate any meaningful user impact, apart from a bit of slowness here and there as things restart, but we'll be sure to let you know here and on Bluesky if things go unexpectedly pear-shaped.

UPDATE: deploy is done, let us know how things are going? 😉

Looks good! Kudos to the dev team for all their hard work in modernizing.

ah, gotcha!! i only bring this up because i tried changing the display name on a different account last night using 'invalid characters' ( ꜱᴛʏʟᴇ ꜰᴏɴᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛʜɪꜱ ) and was linked to that page. now i'm unable to edit it at all and the display name reads as a bunch of ???.

The last time I edited my profile was before the change, and I had two "Other Services" links in it: one to AO3 and one to Twitter. Since the change, those links are still visible on my /profile page, but when I go to /manage/profile, all the fields in the "Other Sites" section are empty. I haven't yet tried just reinputting the same info, in case it's useful to you to be able to investigate how my profile is being stored/rendered in this current state.

The fields in that section also appear in two columns (or four, I suppose: two columns of dropdowns and two columns of text entry fields, which are strangely offset and partially hidden), in a way that makes it impossible to tell which text entry field goes with which dropdown and impossible to activate the text entry fields by clicking on them, unless the viewport is under 1024 px wide.

Design-wise, it seems like everything on the new /manage/profile page takes up a lot more space than it needs to take up; I have to scroll a lot to get to the "Mini Bio" and "Interest" sections at the bottom, and in general it seems like there's only about half as much of the page visible at one time as there used to be, because all the dropdowns and text fields are a lot bigger than they need to be. The page looks pretty good at 70% zoom, but then the text is uncomfortably small (and my browser persists that zoom setting to other pages on the same domain, like /update and /inbox, which look best at 100%). Removing the padding that's being applied to the CSS selectors select and input[type="text"] on /manage/profile, and dropping the height on those selectors from 2.4375rem to about 1.6rem or 1.7rem, makes the page fit on the screen much better and also fixes the issue with the multi-column "Other Sites" display on >1024px wide viewports that I described above: the two columns of dropdown+text field pairs, 13 in each column, fit on my screen at 100% zoom on a 1920x1080 monitor, and can be used/edited normally.

(Sorry I'm not enough of a CSS expert to know why this fixes it—I was just trying to make the page look nicer, and then I noticed the "Other Sites" section had become usable in a full-width browser window in the process!)

(Firefox 134.0.1 on Linux; I have adblockers and NoScript and whatnot but I don't have any custom CSS extensions like Stylish installed.)

As of 30 Jan 25, I'm seeing a total lack of paragraphing in HTML mode (which I prefer to type in). I post, my text shows as a run-on paragraph, so I then go to Rich Text mode and manually insert breaks there. This is an unwelcome hassle. Any thoughts?

Thanks.
