push for minor fixes

About to do a small push to clean up a few bugs from the previous push. Only journal styles and the beta inbox should be affected.

Update: push is complete! Let us know if anything looks weirder than usual!

There was a brief period where users couldn't connect (I doubt I was alone, Down Detector said y'all were down) but here we all are again, yay!

That's related to this issue and can happen in the evening US time because of high traffic -- when it happens, it should fix itself within five minutes as our autoscaling gets to work, but sometimes it can take a few cycles. The autoscaler will scream for help if it can't solve the problem by itself, but usually it's enough!

I assume the backend fetch errors were unrelated. Another site I read is also throwing errors like a pinwheel this evening, so maybe some internet outage? But DW resumed letting me read and post comments, so thanks to whoever kicked anything that needed kicking :-)

We've been having capacity issues in the evenings US time because it's the period of high usage from our US users and also prime business hours for the countries most of our garbage traffic comes from (I have taken to calling it "spam o'clock", sigh). We're pretty sure it was unrelated to the code push, just the coincidental timing of us mostly having the time to work on the site during spam o'clock because of other obligations.

Hooray for canary doing what it was supposed to do and spotting the problem before anyone who wasn't using canary noticed!

This layout for Tabula Rasa got a bigger header and I wasn't able to figure out how to get it back to its previous size.

Hi! Something we're aware of is that with some of the changes that rolled out, styles for #header .inner need to be tweaked to be #header > .inner. If you find that line in the CSS and change it, it should go back to how it was!

If y'all get a chance to look at the support request I submitted about not being able to embed any video whatsoever except for youtube content, it would be super appreciated. I know I'm not the only one who can't embed media at all on this site.

Of the sites you mentioned in that request, Instagram and TikTok embeds are not available to use on Dreamwidth because they use script tags. Our developers still need to look into why the Facebook embed code is not working. It should be whitelisted but it's possible that Facebook has changed their embed format to be different from what our whitelist allows.

I'm very sorry that this is frustrating for you. We have to individually whitelist each allowed embed site, and we can't allow embeds that use script tags because of security concerns.

No worries, another DW admin just suggested I file the request, saying that all of those sites “should” be embedable, but it seems that was not correct. Thank you for the info.

Yeah, sorry, that was me replying without looking up the details of how Instagram and Tiktok do their embeds -- most sites have a noscript version of embeds available but those ones don't, and I don't keep a list in my head of which ones we can't add for security reasons!
