Code push scheduled for Sunday night-ish

We are planning to do a code push late this weekend, at approximately 9pm PST / 12am EST / 5am UTC on either Sunday, Feb 12 or Monday, Feb 13, depending on whether you live east or west of midnight. (Time is an illusion anyway, right?)

Here's a partial list of changes that will go live with this push, apart from the usual minor tweaks and bugfixes:

  • HTTPS Everywhere beta! Users can opt-in to have all Dreamwidth content automatically served over HTTPS. We'll post the instructions for this after the feature goes live.

  • New and improved design for the file management pages, which we were hiding from you because we were so embarrassed about them before. Thanks to [personal profile] momijizukamori for making them prettier and more functional!

  • Backend fixes to resolve problems using the aforementioned file management pages. (Did I already mention the embarrassment?)

  • At long last, international character support for journal search! Our systems guru [personal profile] alierak finally cracked this long-standing bug.

  • Support index page converted to Foundation styling, for your mobile viewing pleasure.

  • For users of the Practicality style: color properties now sort properly in the customization wizard.

  • For users of the Drifting style: the QuickReply box will now appear in the appropriate location, instead of wandering off somewhere unexpected.

  • Improved handling of word break (<wbr>) elements in user entries.

  • Allow embeds from: Facebook, CNN, 4shared.com, playmoss.com, onedrive.com, jsfiddle.net, scratch.mit.edu

We'll update again to let you know when the code push is in progress!

Thanks for the heads-up. Not sure I understand all of it yet, but it's appreciated.

Hm. What do you mean by file management? I'm now overly curious.

So, right now you can upload images to DW (like, for posting in your journal) by emailing them to your journal using post-by-email, or you can upload them inside your browser. But it lacked a good upload-inside-browser page (it was pretty much just a "click here" button), and once things were uploaded, managing them was awfully hard and didn't have much useful anything.

Fortunately, [personal profile] momijizukamori came to the rescue! And now after the next code push, uploading and managing images will be a fuck of a lot easier.

Oh, GOO-OOD! My go-to workaround has been
• start a LJ post
• upload the pic to it
• grab the HTML display code, including the pic's URL at LJ
• start a post here
• paste the LJ code into it
• finish and save the local post, which my preferences cause to automatically xpost to LJ
• view the post locally on my Reading page
• delete the unfinished LJ post

This should be MUCH simpler!

Consider Semagic. Albeit it's a bit old and Windows-only, it offers a solid offline editor and it supports image hostings (not all, and some changed protocols since then, but others still work).

Thank you SO much for this! The lack of image upload capability has been a deal breaker for me for YEARS with DW! If this could be fixed, it would be fantastic!

Perfect birthday present, as I am hoping to move back here this week from that other service that shall remain unnamed!

New and improved design for the file management pages, which we were hiding from you because we were so embarrassed about them before.

The image upload/management pages? They've been workable but definitely with a learning curve (and I've had to keep them bookmarked because you did hide them well).

I wonder how I am supposed to know the name of my style.

Also, picture hosting, please. Not that email hack, but real picture hosting.

THANKS for all your work! I bought a subscription or membership or whatever in appreciation.

It's listed under Style Credit on your journal sidebar, or if you go to Select Style, it'll tell you your current one up at the top. You're using the theme 'Pool' for the style 'Stepping Stones, so nothing will change for you with this push.

Implementing embeds from more sources looks great, thank you for your hard work!

Any chance to see embeds from coub.com? I think, this may have some popular demand.

Second question, a tougher one. Is it too complicated to support embeds in comments?
denise: Image: Me, facing away from camera, on top of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome (Default)

[staff profile] denise 2017-02-11 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
1) To add a new embed source, we need a sample of the embed code. You can open a support request requesting that it be added -- just give us the code for a sample embed. For security purposes, we have to be careful about what embeds we allow, so we might not be able to add it, but we do add everything we get a request for that we can.

2) Not 'complicated' so much as 'for long and boring reasons that would take me forever to explain, comments have to be held to a stricter security standard than entries', alas.

Can't wait for the Facebook embeds! I'm happy to report that the Facebook accessibility people have been doing a nice job at least for VoiceOver users. Thanks as always for keeping it real on Dw! It just wouldn't be the same without all the hard work by many.

I can't speak for the owners, but the general principle that I have observed for changes to Dreamwidth is that there's enough work to do with fixing the back-end and adding useful things (like search that will let you find entries with text in non-English character sets) that there's no point in asking for developer time to make the look and feel of the whole site different if nothing's broken!

There are already enough different colored site skins that there probably isn't much point in adding another, but if another one was added, the existing ones would stay. (The site skins are all listed near the bottom of http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display if you want to see the different options and why they're useful.)

This sort of off topic, but are there any plans to have a photo upload client native to Dreamwidth so we can upload photos directly into our own photo database here instead of having to use a direct URL? I know there are separate photo hosting sites where I can upload there and then link to here, but it's more work that way. Just curious as to whether that's something in the pipeline. Thanks.
