We'll be starting the code push relatively soon; there may be a few blips here and there as we work. I'll update this post when it's all finished!

EDIT: Code has been pushed. Let us know if you encounter any problems! A list of the (many) bugfixes included in this push will be forthcoming.

Still no sidebar. Could you explain how to get back to the older format in very simple terms? (I have a fairly wide screen.)

Thank you very much indeed!

edit: no change whatsoever, but if you can't fix it, you can't fix it. Thanks for trying.

(Still no, but) Thank you anyway. It's a very minor detail to your excellent and admirably efficient site. May all your glitches be as small!

Your sidebar shows up for me at any window size, so the change did work!

"Then, on every device you use, go to http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display and check "Turn off mobile view for this device"."

I love you guys SO MUCH right now for giving us this option! Thank you!

(After the code push my journal was displaying in single-column mode in landscape view on my phone, which was already a massive improvement over the two-column view before the push. But I still have a strong preference for not using mobile view at all.)

If the mobile view option stops working, please set it again! It wan't persisting properly before, but if you do it again now it should stay put.

Thank you! It does seem to be sticking now.

While testing this I discovered that it seems to be not so much a per-device setting as a per-browser one. After I'd checked the check box in Dolphin, I was still getting the mobile view when I viewed my journal in Firefox and had to check the box again there. Both browsers are now remembering the setting, though.

Well, no worries. As long as it's sticking, I'm happy! I only mentioned it at all in case some other user tried loading their journal on two different browsers on the same mobile device and wondered why the setting wasn't carrying over from one to the other. :)

Either 'turn off mobile settings for this device' isn't saving correctly for me, or it's doing it based on something non-static, because I've had to resale that option on my iPhone 3 times now. It appears fine right after I save, but as I move around DC and am on 3G, not a wifi network, it loses that save. So by the time I moved up Wisconsin on the bus, I had to go back to the settings and resale. That's not very viable.

ETA: Also I'm not sure why setting the other values to 0 doesn't fix it, and both steps are required. *confused*

2nd ETA: also I forgot to point out that with both values setting 0, when my device is forgotten, neither horizontal nor vertical orientation works, whereas before this push, vertical was at least legible.

Sorry about that, please set it again it should stick around now.

Setting the other values to 0 only affects your personal journal's style; the mobile settings in account options are for viewing all journals (they're for different use cases, based on your comment it seemed like you'd want both)

It works now, thank you!

I would think, though, if I'm viewing my personal journal, that it wouldn't matter that the other preference isn't sticking.

Oh dear, the setting doesn't want to stick! Android Jelly Bean here, and both in Firefox and Dolphin browser the display spontaneously reverts to mobile view even within a single browser session.

DW is allowed to set cookies, and not only session ones. But the check box that turns off mobile view for the device refuses to stay checked. :(

Hmm... I can't say I'm a fan of the faint little rounded-corners border that's showing up around comments now (at least in my journal/viewing layout style--Ciel). If there's no way to get rid of these borders, it's something I could learn to live with, but I'd much rather not be seeing them. Is there a way I can get rid of this?

(Really, I just don't want any changes whatsoever to how my journal looks. I've had it exactly the way I want it, but the last couple of DW code changes have caused small... issues with this. It's a faintly concerning trend to me.)

[personal profile] jordannamorgan 2014-08-11 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Okay. Guess I'm going to [community profile] style_system to ask if anyone can give me CSS that will make the borders go away.

I'm not opposed to bug fixes or (optional) new features--only odd random changes to little details of my layout, which I would hope DW will never deliberately do. :Þ (Though if this case was caused by the fixing of a bug that had accidentally done a good thing, I understand that.)

It was basically an accessibility issue that I didn't catch until testing mobile views - nested comments were breaking out of the main container and then not having the proper background color because the color was only on the container, not on the comments.

Afuna did a quick fix for this code push because I've been busy with other things. The borders might get tweaked (as they're not directly related to the accessibility issue) but I can't promise it.

Really, really appreciate the opportunity to turn off the mobile browsing option per device, that's absolutely fantastic! Thanks for taking the feedback to heart and making this change an opt, you guys are amazing :D

Psst we had a problem with the mobile browsing option, so it may disappear when you close your browser. If so turn it back on again; it'll stick around properly this time.

Thank you for updating with the opt-out!

I filed a support query several weeks ago about all this and never got a reply. Is that just normal backlog (the automated message doesn't give a time range for answering, which is disappointing but I'm sure it's impossible to give a range)? I don't think I've had to wait this long before on support requests, but it's been a few years since I've had one. I'm curious because I don't want to delete it before its read because it's half 'this is broken' and half 'expressing my dismay at the way this change was handled,' which I don't want to delete unread.

Every request gets looked at when it comes in, usually by at least three different people. When it's a situation like this, where a fix is coming fairly soon and there has been communication via official channels (like a [site community profile] dw_maintenance entry), I prefer to leave the requests alone until the fix is live. Normally, I'd at least leave a note saying that I had seen the request, and I apologize that yours got skipped in error.

Just last week I changed my settings to not show the nav strip, but I'm only getting to try things out now that all my out-of-state family has left and it is calm and quiet once again. I must say, I really like it! It's handy being logged in pretty much all the time, even when I exit Safari. But I also like my journal with the nav strip enabled. As far as problems, I've not experienced any on here. The suspended account is still showing up in my Extended Profile, but that's okay. I'm sure the situation will get resolved eventually, so I'm not complaining. Long live Dreamwidth! Okay, I'm rather beat from partying, so I think I'll sign off for the night. But seriously, keep up the great work. DW is awesome!

The 'don't use mobile view' button doesn't stay ticked for me; I've tried clearing my cache but that didn't work.

Sorry about that! The ticky should persist from this point forward, but you'll have to turn it on one last time and save.
