Turns out this is a bug! I think it's been fixed, but if it hasn't been fixed already, it definitely will be by next code push. In the meantime, you can hit the gear icon in the bar over the subject line (it's labeled "Settings") and uncheck the 'entry flags' panel, which will hide the pane so it doesn't get in your way.
