New hardware deployment

Hi all!

The new database machines I ordered are now installed and spinning up. They're in the beginning phases of their life, which means I've moved a few test accounts (a few communities and some other random people) and will be watching how they behave over the next day or two to make sure that everything is happy.

The new database cluster has been christened Epsilon Eridani and will soon be the home for all of our users.

You should really not expect to see anything yet, but take this post as fore-warning that sometime soon (I'll post again) I will start moving accounts in earnest. You can expect brief bouts of "read-only mode" when this happens, so if you see that starting to pop up around the site in the next few days -- that's why!

I might have popped over to Where am I? and checked to see which cluster I was on after this.

Much excitement for the new server.

I hope this is the right place to ask: just noticed the other day that there were discussion about more site themes back in 2009, and was wondering if there are still any plans to make them. Alternatively, will there ever be a way for users to customize their own site skin?
denise: Image: Me, facing away from camera, on top of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome (Default)

[staff profile] denise 2013-05-30 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
That discussion wasn't anything official, just so you know!

Additional site skins fall under the same considerations as the problems with adding options in general, because too many choices can be worse than having no choice at all. We might do a system by which you can change the colors of your site skin in the future, but it's very low priority, and we have a lot of other things we'd like to do first. The best thing to do if you need different colors or different fonts is to change your settings in your browser, or use an extension such as Stylish to make the changes locally.

Could that affect OpenID?

[personal profile] susanreads 2013-06-02 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
A few days ago I was on Draconis and now I'm on Epsilon Eridani. Today I'm having a problem with OpenID, which I wasn't having yesterday. Could it be connected? I've had problems with it on the other site before which were at their end, but I haven't seen this message until today:
"This is an OpenID server endpoint, not a human-readable resource. For more information, see http://openid.net/."
The popup box's title bar starts http://www.dreamwidth.org/openid/server?openid.identity= and then there's my handle among a lot of code.

Is that when you try to log into another site with OpenID?

(I think I know what's wrong there, but everybody who can fix it is in transit right now. Hang tight!)
