Testing the Fastly CDN

Hi all,

This has now been rolled back. It's not working for some subset of users and that is problematic. We are back to how we were earlier!

I've now rolled out a small change that sends a lot of static traffic through Fastly, an interesting CDN service founded by a guy who I used to work with on LiveJournal. It's a neat service that should give us some really good performance gains -- particularly for users who aren't near our main servers in Dallas.

Edit: If you are using something like NoScript or a similar service that whitelists URLs, you will need to add the following domain:

s.dreamwidth.org.a.prod.fastly.net

Many of you noticed that there was about 15 minutes of broken JavaScript on the site. This showed up as cut tags not expanding, the login form not working, and some other weird behaviors. It's fixed now and was caused by me making a typo in the configuration. Sorry about that.

Please let me know if anything else is broken or not working. Also, if the site seems faster, I'd love to know that too. I'm sure [twitter.com profile] crucially would be interested to hear our opinions of it. :)

Still have a lot not working for me. Basically no hover menu when hovering a username or icon. Still have a lot of wonkiness when trying to comment and no icon browser.

Definitely have refreshed the page and still the same thing.

Edit: Never mind, I'm a moron and the below commenter made me realize I needed to allow it in NoScript.

I'm so glad that you let us know about this. I have NoScript and Fastly was blocked automatically which meant that I couldn't select any of the messages in my inbox for deletion. I allowed the script and things do seem to be moving faster.

The site does seem faster, but I'm experiencing a few things as a result:

+ Browse Icon button does not work
+ "Expand" button when clicked functions the same as "Link"
+ All replies do not just pop up underneath the previous comment--it goes to the actual "reply" screen
+ No hover on main menu bar

That's what I've gotten so far.

My post an entry page is also wonky. I can post as HTML now, but rich text is still broken. There's no toolbar, and I can't type in the entry box (but I can type in the subject field.) Same thing happens in Firefox and Chrome.

Shift-refresh and disabling ad-blocker didn't change anything.

Posting interface is wonky

[personal profile] writerlibrarian 2012-03-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My post interface is broken. I've logged out, logged in again. I am not using a no script.

I can't access either the rich text space or the html space. The rich text space doesn't have any menu. I've also tried to edit an entry no dice. Same problem.

I have to join those who can't write new posts either. I'm using Firefox 10.0.2 on WinXP pro (with all Service packs and updates), not using NoScript and otherwise restricting Plugins. It's also not working with all Addons deactivated, nor on other browsers where I don't use any (Seamonkey current version, IE7). I've also restarted my machine to be sure.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by shift-refresh, but if it's refreshing the browser page with STRG+R or STRG+SHIFT+R, it's not working.

When I hit "post", I can fill any line or choose any drop-down menu, but the main text window just shows "Rich text" without any buttons, and no text can be entered. When I click on "HTML", I get the info "javascript:void(0);"

Recently the Expand All function was not working for me, and yesterday DW kept logging me out of DW despite LJ Login still having me nicked to the journal I had last been nicked to. Were either of these due to the typo?

I have a question, and I'm not sure if this problem is related to today's adventures in coding or not, but when I just went to one of my entries to add tags to it, the form showed my tag list as completely empty (and I have a lot of tags which are visible in every other view. Was that affected at all by the latest code push or is it something wacky on my end?

I'm probably posting later than those among us who had the above problems; just wanted to say I'm not having those problems and thank you Dreamwidth for doing this. Maybe it's just my imagination but DW does seem faster for me tonight (didn't drag loading my Inbox for like the first time ever, and everything else seems to pop right up) ....so I want to say thanks so much for adding the CDN (this is actually similar to a Suggestion I was going to make months ago, but my variation was using CloudFlare - both for added security and added speed).

Yeah, and it got rolled back in just a very short time, not days/weeks/months... Doesn't it break your brain just a little bit? All in a good way, of course. XD

AND! If you ask a question, you actually get an answer -- in polite, friendly language. Go figure. Gotta love these wacky people on Dreamwidth. *giggles*

I was coming to ask a question about possible ramifications, but since it's been rolled back, I don't know if it's related at all. :x I was uploading icons, and several didn't upload; I got a message saying you can't upload large files through urls, but it's definitely a 100x100 icon, not animated, so I can't imagine it being secretly huge. I've never had this problem with icons before, so I though it was worth asking.

Icons can only be 40kb in size, so even if they're definitely 100x100 pixels, if the file size is too large you'll get that error too. Also, you may want to doublecheck the pixel size -- sometimes some image editing programs don't report the pixel size properly while you're editing!

I'm still experiencing weird behaviors for DW. Alot. All my journal links which should be at the top are listed at the bottom of the screen on the left hand side. Tags to posts seem elongated and I'm not seeing a page 2 link to click when I'm certain there is one. Also even when logged in, when I try to tag a comment, it brings up a login screen as follows:

That means you're not having the Javascript load, which usually means that you've cached an outdated copy of the page. Clear your browser cache, restart your browser, and try again.

For some reason, since time change, the site keeps logging me out if I try to reply to a comment. I can't actually reply to the comment thread, it takes me to a new window as though I'm not logged in and makes me log in again to respond. I've tried restarting my computer and clearing my cache out and everything I can think of. For a little while last night it wasn't letting me do anything logged in. But I can do that part now. Do you know what might fix this? Oh DLS, you cause so many headaches.

Usually that means your browser is having trouble retaining the cookies. Most commonly the cause of that is using a "cookie swap" extension such as LJLogin or the like -- try disabling any extensions that are designed to manage your login sessions and try again.

Zombie subject line and date

[personal profile] thnidu 2012-03-12 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem that has essentially locked me out of posting on DW (Request #14279): Every time I try to post, I have to correct the actual date of the post (which is not what appears on the Post Entry page, but
February | 29 | 2012 | 16 | 49
). If I don't fix it, I get a bogus "Incorrect time value" error message and lose all the fields I'd entered except the message text. I also get a zombie subject line, corresponding to the post I originally posted at that time. It's too much trouble for me to post here anymore until this gets fixed.
