embedded content unavailable for ~20 minutes

Our embedded content domain (embedded.dreamwidth.net) was unreachable for ~20 minutes. This was because Slicehost suffered a power outage in their DFW data center.

We have moved all production services off of Slicehost, but apparently the DNS for the embedded domain was still pointing at the old IP. Since I still have the old IP available (it simply forwards to the new IP) it was still working. When the slice went down we lost that forwarding and it broke embedded content.

I've corrected the IP on our domain so it should be updated to the new IP address in the next 24-48 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Obviously it's too late now, but lowering the TTL in a zone prior to any planned migration is always a good idea. It's nice to be able to cut the propagation time down.

I use a TTL of 600 on all of my zones, so the DNS change should go out quickly for most people. I still hate to promise that, though, because I'm quite familiar with caching DNS servers used by some ISPs that like to hang on to things they shouldn't ...

Many ISPs do things they shouldn't, but you've got a fair point there since most end users can't tell the difference between their ISP's configuration error and a site's migration process.
