Email notifications

There was a bug in sending email notifications due to a fix to another bug that I made last night. I've fixed the email notifications so they will start to go through again, but there's not a way for me to resurrect emails that didn't get sent overnight.

If you are missing a notification, you will probably be able to find it in your Inbox. If you can't find it there, and you didn't get an email, we don't have any ways of seeing what you missed overnight.

Yeah, the .bml-killing was just done on the menu items for now! I am in the process of killing BML links throughout the site, but, uh, there were some problems with my patches. *G*

You're in beta, that's reasonable. But I hope you can find a better way to tell people, most people are not subscribed to this community.

And for what it's worth, 37,551 people subscribe to this community. (38,586 subscribe to dw_news.) I think that's substantially all of the community at this point.

I could be wrong about this, but I think dw_maintenance is one of the automatic subscriptions given to new DW users. If they've unsubscribed from it, they've probably done so on purpose. Doing more aggressive measures like emailing everyone also stands the chance to upset people who'll call it spam.

What was the fix for the fix? Have we got this sorted or is it another stopgap measure?

It's absolutely a stopgap right now and needs a real fix. All I did was, on dfw-jobs01/02, uncommented the require weblib line. Now, on those servers, the library is loaded out of order: but that's okay most of the time, and it's fine for the jobservers.

I'm not sure what the real fix is. But there needs to be one at some point... probably sooner rather than later. :)

Is it not as simple as doing BEGIN { LJ::Config->load; } in whatever file the webserver loads first?

It might be, I haven't really investigated.

Easiest way to test it is, at the top of weblib.pl, put in 'warn "weblib loaded!\n"' and then at the top of your etc/config.pl put in 'warn "ljconfig loaded!\n"'. Then restart your webserver and watch the Apache error log.

If you're busy tonight I'll probably take a whack at it, so I can get production out of the funky half-state.

I was set to comment with "I think this is fine, it's not like I got any comments last night anyway," and then realized as zarhooie pointed out that there's finally a logged-in homepage (which, btw, YAY, I have been wanting one for EVER) that I do actually have comments in my inbox.

I think that there is not currently a notifications option for people who want them in email and not in the inbox, which is sometimes a problem (for people who don't like having an inbox) but is also sometimes a solution (like here and now).

Aren't there notifications that are email-only, though? On my account settings/notifications, the inbox column for "Someone sends me a message" is greyed out; the email column for replies to my comments in other journals is greyed out, but it's actually the other way round I believe.
