Code push has happened!

Hi all, I'm preparing to do a code push. You can see the latest code tour here: https://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/214638.html

Hang on to your hats!

Edit: The code has pushed! As always, please let us know if you see anything wonky or broken and we'll get on it!

Known Issues - Fixed 'em Maybe?

* Font size was way too small. We've tweaked them to be larger, but would welcome more feedback!
* Lack of ability to horizontally resize comment area. This has been fixed, you can drag the box horizontally again like you should be able to!
* A couple of style issues have been found and fixed.
* An issue affecting some Navigation strips has been fixed.
* An issue affecting syndicated accounts, proxied images, and a couple other worker related tasks were broken. They're better now.
* We've made some updates to the design of the comment reply form, we brought back the browse button, made the subject line full-width, and some other tweaks. Please let us know what you think!
* The RTE on the old create entry form is returned to service. A few more months, that's all we ask of you old friend...
* OpenID was broken, it's back.
* Button sizes are reset to default, we are no longer trying to make things line up. Let the ziggurat design pattern live on.
* Polls should show properly sized bars again.
* Lots more Android issues, we had to murder the unused spellcheck button to make it work out. Some weird interactions with differently sized elements and our ancient HTML.

Known Issues - Pending

* Related, some fields seem to have gone emo and are putting on heavy eyeliner (have bold, dark outlines). We're aware.

All known issues are being investigated and will be fixed! Please hang tight while we work on it :)

If you are reporting something visual, please let us know what browser/device you're on!

Just seconding that I can't access the browse icon function on an account without a default icon set (ex: this one). The random icon function still works, but doesn't activate the option. I'm using Mobile Chrome on an android device right now.

Woah, so I don't know what happened with the width of things but things changed how dwtools looks? :O **Chrome

Testing...

I am initially not happy that the Subject is on the same line as the dropdown icon select (the only select I ever use anyway), and I'm pretty sure it didn't used to be, but since I so rarely use a Subject line in comments -- and you haven't touched the Post To Journal page, WHEW -- I will probably adjust quickly.

As noted, I only ever use the dropdown menu for icon selection, so as long as there's one of those, with my icons reasonably findable by keyword, I'm copacetic on that front. (I haaaaaate the "select icon by visually looking at them" method. HAAAAAAATE it. So I don't use it, yay!)

Font definitely too small. Especially for my eyes, which have some uncorrectable issues that mean I have to crank fonts up a lot everywhere, and it gets pretty ugly looking when I have to crank everything up, just because one vital part is too small. (I'm on Firefox, on a Mac. A very old Mac.)

I feel vaguely disquieted by the button placements at the bottom, but I think it's "NEW THING IS SUSPICIOUS" rather than usage problems. I may also be hyper-reacting because you said that there were new things here. ...the buttons are very square=cornered. I just came from Flight Rising, and miss the rounded buttons. >_< OXD

My main issue is that the comment form looks too minimalistic for my tastes, but that's just me being picky.

weird nav strip behaviors:

on custom layouts it seems hit and miss (seeing some where it's fine, seeing some where it's fine and just missing the icon), but 'default' layouts i'm seeing both 'tiny icon giant nav strip' and 'giant icon floating nav strip'. i'm mainly using chrome/vivaldi.

examples:

edit - when i started writing this comment, the nav strip thing wasn't a known issue, apologies if i'm (again, lmao) making redundant reports.

Hi team! I personally enjoy seeing the icon, as it provides a preview without having to click preview.

However, when it came to Browse, it appears that it needed a lot of searching in order to know that you had to hover over the icon to find that option.

My suggestion would be to put the browse option under the icon itself, in a visible link so people who read it can understand straight away, and it looks like there's a lot of space below the icon hotspot now that it can be utilised.

Something like this as an example:

I don't currently see any issues with the text sizing, but the organization of the buttons is not super intuitive and I'm not sure why a lot of the icon options are so removed from the icon selection? I think this was addressed in a thread further up, but if there's any way to reorganize the layout of the comment fields, this change would be a lot easier to weather.

Comparing all the screenshots in this thread of the comment reply box, I'm seeing a lot of inconsistency? Like, maybe people have scripts going and that's affecting things, but look at these side by side:

[personal profile] bookkeeper has four boxes by Subject

[personal profile] voiceoftruth has two

[personal profile] conjobs has a slightly different two

[personal profile] 404s has those two, but one's below

I noticed two visual things with this - one is a genuine issue, the other is probably just an "I liked it the old way better", lol. I'm using Firefox on Linux Mint.

You can see both of them here: https://imgur.com/9QPkgdu

The genuine issue is very minor - part of the final letter in each of the main links (Recent Entries, Archive, Reading, etc.) is clipped off (I'm using the Tropospheric Red theme, if that matters).

The one where it changed to something that's probably OK but I greatly prefer the old way is the top bar - you can see the items are widely spaced out. With a 1920x1080 resolution, that makes them very far apart indeed - and that's awkward for me, who was used to being able to see them close together at the left. I'd prefer them to be clumped together at the left again, if possible, rather than spread evenly across the (very wide) screen.

Personally, I really miss having the link to the icons page where it used to say "Icon to use." I found it really helpful to have that easy way of opening that page when choosing an icon for journals without paid accounts, and the lack of it has kinda thrown me a few times already tonight.

Thanks for reading and considering everyone's feedback!

The reading page is a skinny column for me. If I click into a post, or go to comments, the page is regular full size.

Oh for goodness sake, there I went and messed up my comment-ing.

The width of all the boxes (icon dropdown, subject, and text area) seems weird to me (as in, it's less than half my monitor width and that doesn't seem how it was?).

Also I'm not really loving 'random icon' being down in the weeds with the quote button. But it's not horridly broken or anything, just... Meh?

<3 y'all.

ETA: oh Ew. When I clicked edit comment? Things went really weird and ugly. I'll grab a screenshot. ETA3: By 'weird and ugly' I mean the bolding around the subject and reason for edit boxes.

ETA4: right. Chrome I have nfi what version, Windows 10.

Also just noticing when commenting on the new form, there's no easy link to my journal. I think I remember that being available before (like [personal profile] helplessworld at the top of the form) and it's just kind of irksome because if I want to reference something in my journal, I have to scroll all the way up to the top of the page now vs just right clicking the user icon at the top of my comment.

I could be mistaken about it but even still a ("commenting as...") function would be nice.

1. https://vass.dreamwidth.org/file/27784.png

Screencap is of my reading page. In the userpic selection dropdown in the quick reply, the lower half of the text is cut off.

Device: desktop. Screen resolution 1366x768, but I use the TreeStyleTab add-on, so the width is in effect shorter than that.

Browser: Firefox 67.0.3, Linux.

And on the principle that more info can't hurt:

2. In the slow-reply, the text is still a bit small for comfort. Not so much the comment text itself, but the subject header and the userpic dropdown and the buttons below.

3. The nav strip looks fine on my device/browser. Unless it was meant to look identical to how it looked before, in which case it doesn't. But it doesn't look at all wrong as it is now.

Thank you!

A couple of issues: I can't switch to Rich Text when posting. And my journal default should be for posting should be 'access list', but it had defaulted to 'everyone' when I posted this morning.

Thanks!

I had to read existing comments on this page to figure out how to browse my icons. It's unintuitive and I would greatly appreciate the return of the "browse" button.

Hi again team, thanks for all the fixes! It's a lot smoother now.

I have noticed this happened now, since I use two different browsers, and I'm not sure if the inconsistency is intended:

Firefox (and roots): The icon selection and the subject are inline.

Chromium browsers: The icon selection and subject are on two different lines.

It still works fine otherwise!

Commenting on a post that has hit 5000+ comments and reached captcha seems to require you to log in again.

When you comment, then get to the captcha page, even though it looks as though you're logged in at the top of the screen, the comment section acts as though no account is logged in (and in my case, fills the 'login' section with details for a different account). Cannot select icons to use because it believes I'm logged out.

"Selecting a userpic is different. We are going to bring back the browse button and move a few things around to address some of the feedback people have provided."

Don't know if this is part of the change or a lucky side-effect but the icons come up way more quickly now. Thanks :)
