Considering that 90% of DW users use Gmail, that would be kind of counterproductive!

Believe me, I know this is incredibly frustrating -- we're just as frustrated. The worst of the problem to non-Gmail accounts only happens at times of high mail load, but "times of high mail load" inherently mean the times the most people are using the site. If there were anything at all we could have done, we would have done it a long time ago.
