Imports from LJ re-enabled

After a bunch of testing, we are pleased to announce that we've been able to re-enable imports from LiveJournal. Apologies for the delay: we were waiting for the LJ cookie changes to stabilize and be documented!

Thanks go to LJ for making their changes more backwards-compatable. If you'd like to start a new import from LJ, you can do so at the Import Content page.

And if you queued up your imports when imports were disabled, they'll start automatically, no need to re-import :)

If I import journal comments from crossposted entries, do they get added to the comments already in DW?

Are all content elements added? Eg I have additional entries for polls (that obvs. can't cross post); they will just show up as a second version?

You can tell the importer what to import. If you just want to grab new comments, you can tell it to just import comments. If you just want entries, you can tell it to do that without the comments. It's been a long time since I've used the importer so I don't recall what all of the categories are that you can check. Icons may be another one.

I don't know what happens if you have a poll on LJ and you import that entry. I'm pretty sure you will still get an entry over here but I don't know what it will look like.

I know; only the comment import automatically pulls in all entries too (or at least explicitly announces it'll do so. :)

What I wish to know, I guess, is that nothing gets overwritten -- merely amended?

I don't think I am understanding then. If you changed something on LJ after your last import, it will update your entries here with those changes. Is that what you want to know?

Yes, sorry for being unclear: Since DW is my primary, I wish it were dominant, ie that only where there is no like content on DW, LJ is added (but doesn't overwrite, say, my corrected DW tags).

Gotcha! As far as I know, it will add the tags from LJ but not change the ones you already have here.

Can someone else jump in and verify that for me?

I am silly and started a new import instead of letting the queued one from 3 weeks ago proceed. The weird thing is that now, the new job gets 'aborted' at the credentials-checking stage. I thought I might have mistyped the password, the first time, but trying again much more carefully yielded the same result... Now I wonder what's happening. :(

I would like to jump on this opportunity to say how very delighted I am with the functionality and interface here at Dreamwidth! It is so clean and simple, the font is easy to read, in the spell check preview not only is the hypertext already implemented but you can edit the subject as well and you can see which icon you chose too. And with Dreamwidth I don't get buggered with grayed-out screens and 'wait for the advert to finish' shenanigans when I forget to turn off Javascript. Dreamwidth is really nice!
