Nginx has been banished!

Hey all,

Sorry for the 'Welcome to nginx!' issues we've been seeing for a bit now. It was a server configuration issue that hit us when a webserver rebooted.

Basically when the machine rebooted, nginx (software that can act as a web server) started up and then when Apache (the software Dreamwidth code uses for a web server) tried to start, it failed because nginx had already started and registered on the ports (the way web server software gets your requests).

Again, sorry for the site issues. Everything should be back to happy-times now, so let us know if you see any issues!

Thank you! I'm still seeing this message in a couple of older entries though: http://lethe1.dreamwidth.org/tag/videos (scroll down to 13 Nov. and 11 Nov.)

Hi lethe! Those entries both load fine for me (in that I see embedded YouTube videos) -- this might be a problem with your browser cache. Could you do a hard refresh (usually you can do this by holding down shift while clicking the refresh button) and tell me if you're still getting error messages after that?

Thank you!

Hi kaberett, no, that doesn't work, I'm afraid.

ETA It does work in Firefox, but in Safari I keep seeing those two entries with the nginx message.

Can I get you to try

Thank you, that's useful information to have!

Can I get you to try <a href="clearing your browser's cache</a>? <a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache">This WikiHow page</a> has instructions on how to do so for Safari on several flavours of OSX, iOS/iPhone/iPad, and Windows.

I don't see an option to clear my cache in my Safari menu, but I believe it has cleared up of its own accord. I can see the videos in both entries again.

Thank you very much for your help! :)

I was a bit flummoxed after logging off last night with everything okay and then this morning the nginx page appeared. I'd done the computer housekeeping yesterday (always do it on a Sunday) and knew I'd installed nothing new, so I rebooted and then everything was okay so I think that must have coincided with you fixing it. Thank you.

Hi scarletsoldier!

Could you please try doing a hard refresh (usually this works by holding down the shift key while clicking the refresh button) and clearing your browser's cache? If you're still seeing error messages after you've done those (and especially if you've already done them!) please tell me.

Thank you for letting me know that you're still seeing problems!

[personal profile] mdlbear 2016-12-27 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Looked at Google, Wikipedia, and Snopes. Did turn up an article that probably accounts for the Russian exodus: The logic of Russian Internet censorship - The Washington Post
" LiveJournal has only been taken down explicitly twice to my knowledge. Last July, on
the morning of the Navalny verdict, the entire site was suddenly taken down with a
notice of “Planned Maintenance.” And the blocking of Navalny’s blog on LiveJournal
Thursday was the only time it had been specifically taken down. "

My only other data point is that https://www.iplocation.net/ says that mdlbear.livejournal.com is located in San Francisco. IP location is inexact, of course; I can think of several ways to hide their location, and traceroute is blocked somewhere along the way; they might simply be using their old US servers as routers/caches.

All over the world. Europe, Middle East, Africa. They've created a ban list of users Russian government doesn't like and disabled the access to those accounts for the last couple days. Today or late yesterday the ban has been lifted, but the privacy concerns and ability to read "anything that you want" still remains a big concern.

What is kind of funny is, that as they point out in the comments dreamwidth.org is being actively blocked by some of the Russian ISPs as well. It sort of breaks up the community Russian immigrants from outside of Russia play here, Russians inside Russia play there.

Many people are concern, that it might overload your servers. If you make some sort of public announcement of what might help to prevent that, i.e. money infusions etc. it might help to alleviate some of those fears.
