The site will be going down for maintenance in about ten minutes (at the time I'm writing this). Again, we're going to try for read-only mode rather than "maintenance mode", but that might not be possible.

We'll keep you updated if it looks like we're going to run long, but we're hoping to complete this in 2 hours or less. Watch the offsite status Twitter account for updates.

EDIT: And, we're back! Just goes to show, when [staff profile] mark estimates an hour and you schedule 2 hours just to be safe, everything will finish much faster than that.

We've noticed a few instances of icons not loading, and are looking into it.

God *damn*, that was amazingly quick. Bravo to Mark, and bravo to you too, Denise, for keeping us updated.

It was agony to be without your marvellous services for even this long, but it seems we all managed to muddle along somehow ♥ .

It's handy being in the UK - all the down times coincide with when I'm in bed and asleep :-) I didn't even pick up the message about the down time until this morning!

But every time it happens, I'm impressed by how fast it all happened. Well done!

I whined for one tweet, but the site was up again by the time I had finished my yeast dough for the cinnamon buns and just in time to be off for an hour of vigorous swimming in the uni pool.

'tis the blog service of my heart, no lie.

Try clearing your browser cache -- some browsers hold on to the site maintenance page pretty aggressively (for things like icons, etc) and that can really affect page loading times.

Uhm, whatever it was, it's already better. The only reason I commented was because I was pretty sure it wasn't the cache. Thank you, anyway - everything's in working order, now. (Who knows? Maybe it was my connection.)

Glad it's better!

(And yeah, a lot of the time, something that doesn't look like cache can be cache anyway -- we've made some recent changes to tweak the headers that are being sent so stuff stops getting cached when it shouldn't be, which should help in future.)

For me, site search on Firefox (current Mac version) returns
Error: Sorry, we were unable to find a result in the time allotted. This may mean that the server is busy or down. Please try your query again later.
on the majority of search terms; ditto Safari. Chrome isn't giving me results on any of them.

Blockage seems at least partially term-related; e.g., 'poetry' will provide the first page of results (though clicking 'More results' brings up the error message) but 'poetree' is always blocked. Ditto my experiments with 'lovely' (yes) vs. 'lovelorn' (no), which was making me think that more frequent usages were getting through and rare ones not, except that 'mockingbird' will produce the first page of results where 'bird' does not.

Same here. It'll work occassionally, but not for most things, and it's not a "refresh and it's better" like it used to be. Some terms just don't work.

I've been having the same problem and was just coming to comment on it! I'm running Chrome, and can't get any results to show anything whatsoever. I used to be able to just redo the search and eventually get results, but now it's just cockblocking me entirely. :(

FYI - site search still seems to be selectively down on the same terms I mentioned in my comment on the 15th. Will this be a long-term thing, do you think?

It will probably continue until we have a chance to do the maintenance that's needed, which alas we don't know when we'll be able to get to: the time we were going to use to deal with it has been taken up with other maintenance.

Thanks for the poke.

The issue here is that the machine is very busy, so some searches are timing out if they're not returning quick enough -- or if all of our search workers are busy with other queries.

I just now submitted a request to our hosting provider to price a new machine with better hardware. As soon as he gets the quote back to me, I'll provision it and then we can move search over to the new machine. This will probably take two weeks start to finish.

I will update [site community profile] dw_maintenance as soon as I have a concrete plan.

Sorry for dropping the ball here; thanks again for poking me.

I've gotten a few 500 errors within the last fifteen minutes. No idea why--I haven't done anything differently. One was when trying to post a comment; another was when going to the homepage. I wasn't sure where else to mention this.
