We are beginning tonight's code push shortly! We realized when we sat down to start working on the process that this push is a little more involved than we thought it would be (we moved around a bunch of backend stuff -- not the files on the site, but the utilities and packages that make it possible for the site to run -- and switched a few repositories to different locations, so the release process this time is a wee bit more complex than the usual).

Mark is making his list and checking it twice, but there's the very small chance things will break for a few minutes when we start the actual process of updating. If that happens, just hang on tight, watch the offsite status Twitter account, and we promise we'll fix it ASAP!

(And let us hope that now that I have made it a point of warning y'all, nothing bad happens.)

We'll post again to [site community profile] dw_maintenance once we've finished the push.

Ha! I don't think I've ever actually been online and on DW when you've done one of these. First time for everything.

Hope you're having fun in WI. Travel safely!

Let us all hope that you do not wind up saying "Man, I was there for the code push that blew up." :)

XD That'll never happen, my friend. :D

(And yes, I posted this in the wrong place, the first time. You're lucky I'm not doing the code push. :P)

LOL! *remembers The Great Livejournal Blackout of '05*

21-step Livejournal Blackout Survival 101 icon

Ok, not implying that a code push would have that result, but the idea of adapting the icon to DW amused me for a few... ;>

I remember that! ...I think that particular downtime was someone pushing the Big Red Button again, right?

(For those who don't remember: the server facility LJ's servers were hosted in back in the 2000-2005 era had the giant "emergency power off" switch -- aka the Big Red Button -- to be pressed in the event of disaster to cut the power to the entire floor all at once. ...Someone, thoughtfully, had installed it at precisely the location and height of a handicapped door-open button. ...They eventually put a plastic mollyguard over it.)

I think the Molly guard was installed after the first time (October 2001). Unfortunately, it doesn't help when some idiot removes the cover and presses the EPO switch.

That 2001 thread is *history*. I totally love it talking about ext3 like it's the OMG NEW THING.

My old school's computer room used to have a Big Red Button by the door in exactly that way. So OK, it wasn't a global effect, but you could see the 30-odd students who had just lost their work (or Tetris games) staring at you....

So DW's code push is now "present throughout the universe". Never knew we got that big.
