Code pushed!

The code push is now complete! Please report any problems here for the next 24 hours or so (and to Support after that).

Code tours describing changesets included in this push are:

* 22 Feb - 13 Mar
* 14 Mar - 23 Mar

In particular, we're asking people to turn on the "New JS on Journals" option on the Beta Features page. We've finished converting all the JavaScript inside your journal to JQuery, the more modern JavaScript library we're moving towards. The version available for beta testing now is the release candidate. With the next code push, we will be opting everyone into that beta (with the ability to still opt out of the beta version if you discover a showstopper bug that prevents you from using your journal); with the code push after that, the code will be taken out of beta and you will no longer be able to turn off the new JavaScript behavior at all.

So, turn on the beta now, and report any bugs with JavaScript in your journal to the [site community profile] dw_beta "Last Call" post if you're sure it's related to the new JavaScript, or here if you aren't sure whether or not it's an issue with the new JS!

Is the size change in the icon browse popup related to the new js, and is there a way to make it smaller again? The small size took much less time to scroll through.

Unfortuately, that doesn't make the images smaller. Trying to quickly scan icons at full size right next to one another without (comparatively) as much padding gives me visual fatigue way, way faster than the old icon menu — I was really happy that I'd mostly moved to dw before livejournal rolled out a similar change for this reason — and they all blur together for me, so the whole thing is decidedly less helpful. I was really looking forward to buying more icon slots when that comes around, so this change is actually kind of distressing, because it makes larger numbers of icons more difficult to manage.

Done and done. An option somewhere in the account settings tab would be lovely, from a personal standpoint — I don't begrudge the people who find this easier to use at all and if it's the behavior people want it should be the default, but the last icon selector did have options for everyone's size preferences and this doesn't, so it's a bit of an unwelcome shock. If it isn't handled natively before the beta goes live I'll have to ask someone to create a gm script for me, yeah.

Thank you. ♥ The quarter size icons are easiest for me by a lot but anything would be better.

Upon consideration, you probably wouldn't have heard complaints from the people who the smaller size was working for — it was working fine for us, so no complaints! T...this side of the accessibility concern is a brand new world.

I think it's also a function of how people use the icon browser differently. I tend to memorize the location of the icon I want and go to that location, so having the whole icon rather than just a small marker there is way too much visual information.

Having size options seemed be effective in the last icon browser, though, and I don't think anyone would mind it not being the default behavior... so I'll remain hopeful that enough people share my problem that that's implemented. I'll keep my fingers crossed for fewer columns, too. Thanks again for your responsiveness.

This is because you weren't hearing the people quietly flipping tables over the old icon browser *g* It drove me nuts that it defaulted to quarter-size EVERY TIME because only full-size is ever useful for me, so I'd have to click to change the displayed size, and was almost at the point at writing a suggestion up for it (which, I am v. lazy and that is Effort)

Ahahaha, yep. I never used the browser because little pictures are completely useless to me for visual identification. I probably still won't now, just because a decade-plus of LJ/DW use has me permanently accustomed to remembering my icons based on the keywords and not the pictures (and to opening the allpics page when I can't remember due to browser-not-useful habits), but the full-size view is so much better to me.

Yes. Same here. I know my icons by name. LOL And only peek when I haven't been to a journal for awhile and can't remember what I want.

Yeah, I have the suspicion that there are a lot of people who were unhappy with the old icon browser behavior but didn't think to speak up because we all thought it was just How Things Were, and there's no point in complaining if it won't get changed *g*

Apparently a lot of people spoke up! I was just pointing out that the people for whom the old icon browser was more effective were also not speaking up because... it already worked for them.

Yes, I was aware people were flipping tables over that! That's why I said that I certainly didn't mind if small pictures were not the default behavior, as long as I still had it as an option. Otherwise I'll have to flip tables about not being able to use the icon browser at all, when formerly people who couldn't use the small icons could switch to the larger ones; that'd just be unfortunate.

Either way, though, we'll come up with something (even if it's just "five people are having problems with it and the other two hundred thousand prefer it this way, so we'll make an officially unofficial Greasemonkey script and make sure those five people know where it is"!)

Not having this particular problem, but THIS is why my main blog is at DW, and only mirrored at LJ. Thank you for taking care of your users! :)

I don't mind the new layout and it'll be a help for searching for a specific icon during tagging, but I'm echoing the wish that there could be a Half/Full size toggle. Other than that, it works great and loads quick which is great!

Yeah, I'm having a bit of a problem with it myself? not just the size, but the size of the padding and the number of icons creates this sort of wall of images that makes it hard for me to pick out one from the other, and the more I tried to brute force my way through selecting I could feel my eyes starting to hurt a little bit.

When I tried it on my phone and laptop (which is an older model, just as a caveat), there was significant slowdown, and on the android phone I wasn't able to select more than the first four icons, see their keywords, or scroll down to get more. This was a problem with the old way, but I could remember being able to make the size smaller, so I could see more icons as a workaround. I admit that I'm also one of the people who's all too happy to eat up icon slots, so for some of my rp journals, that slowdown might become a problem in the future when I fill them up/buy more slots.

And! I'll head over to the beta comm to give more of the technical specs/the crunchy bits.

Upon consulting with friends, I realized that I didn't even know you could make the icons fullsize in the old icon browser, because I was so content with the smaller size. Is the new one going to have size options eventually?

I know this reply is late, but I believe the new icon browser is part of the create entries page beta, rather than the JS beta!
